Teammate Spotlight: Robert J., Software Development Team Lead

At Red Dog Media, our success is built by the people behind the work. Today, we’re excited to spotlight Robert J., who was recently promoted to Team Lead of one of our three software development teams after two years with us.

With more than 20 years of experience in software development and technology leadership, Robert brings deep expertise, a passion for building things from the ground up, and a leadership philosophy centered around helping others succeed.

From Aviation Dreams to Software Development

Robert’s journey into technology didn’t begin with code; it began with airplanes. At 13 years old, Robert dreamed of becoming a professional pilot. He began flying before he had his driver’s license and earned his private pilot license at 17. But another influence was quietly shaping his future. “My dad was a software engineer and got me to take some programming classes in high school,” Robert reflects, “I loved building something out of nothing.”

While pursuing aviation in college, Robert quickly realized that flight training was expensive. Programming became a practical way to fund his aviation goals, but as opportunities in software development grew, one job led to another. “I decided to get a ‘backup degree’ in computer science just in case,” he says. “In the process of earning money for flight school, I just never made it back to flight school.”

That decision ultimately led to a successful career spanning decades of innovation and leadership.

A Career Built on Technology and Leadership

Before joining Red Dog Media, Robert held a variety of leadership roles across the tech industry. Most recently, he served as CEO of NetAngel, a startup focused on internet filtering and parental control software. He also worked as Chief Technology Officer at Mobile Tool Network, where he led the delivery of cloud-native technology solutions.

Earlier in his career, Robert spent nearly a decade at Humana, rising from Lead Architect to Associate Director of DevOps Engineering, and also served as Director of Development at Service Repair Solutions.

Throughout these roles, Robert discovered something that continues to drive him today: helping teams succeed. “I enjoy working with people and helping people be successful,” he notes. “That’s led to a variety of leadership opportunities throughout my career.”

Returning to Work With Familiar Faces

Robert’s path to Red Dog Media was also shaped by long-standing professional relationships.

He previously worked with Brett R., our Vice President of Technology, and David J., another Software Development Team Lead, more than a decade ago at Service Repair Solutions, and has kept up with their journey at Red Dog Media. “When I ended up needing to look for new employment, I saw a job posting for Red Dog,” Robert remembers. “[Brett and David] were great to work with back then.”

Two years into his journey here at Red Dog Media, that decision has proven to be the right move.

Building the Future of Software Development

Robert has played a key role in shaping the backend systems, including helping build our new site architecture from the ground up. “This really turned into a big project when we started building the new site from scratch,” he explains. “I learned a ton and was able to help move that project forward.”

When asked about his work, Robert makes it clear, “I keep data flowing fast, efficient, and accurate so our marketing effort can be as successful as possible.”

His day-to-day work blends deep technical focus with collaboration, whether that means writing code, solving technical challenges, or working with teammates on system design and planning. One project he particularly enjoys working on involves push notifications, which help keep customers informed about new events and opportunities.

Stepping Into Leadership at Red Dog Media

Robert recently stepped into the role of Software Development Team Lead, bringing his leadership experience back into focus. After spending the past few years as an individual contributor, the transition back into management came with mixed feelings and enthusiasm. “There are things I love about both roles,” Robert stated. “But I’m excited about the opportunity to help the team be successful.”

His leadership philosophy is simple:

“I believe in working hard but having fun doing it.”

A Culture Built on Great People

Ask Robert what he enjoys most about Red Dog Media, and the answer comes quickly, “The people….[They] make all the difference.” He describes the culture of developers as a group of “super smart, but humble people that really know how to build cool software.”

One mentor who left a lasting impression on Robert is David J., whose willingness to help others stuck with him long before joining Red Dog.

“I remember really struggling with something years ago,” Robert shares. “David didn’t even have responsibility for the issue, but he knelt next to my desk and helped me solve it, and understand it.”

That spirit of collaboration continues to shape Red Dog’s culture today.

Outside the Office

When he’s not writing code, Robert enjoys spending time outdoors. His interests include hiking, running, fishing, backpacking, biking in the summer, and skiing in the winter. And while he hasn’t flown in years, his love for aviation remains strong.
